Travel 2023: Rekindle Romance in Washington D.C.

Rekindling Romance

Escape and find a purpose! In our February/March 2023 issue of Zoomer magazine, we featured “23 Reasons to Travel in 2023”. In this edition, we find romance in the U.S. capital. Click on the link at the bottom of the story for more ideas and inspiration for your next trip.

In recent years, Washington has been associated with riots and rogue Republicans, not romance. But if you’re in the mood for love, it may surprise you. The capital city of the free world is “hot just like an oven,” as D.C. native Marvin Gaye’s song goes – perfect for a getaway with your paramour.

It’s also on fire with fun and foodie culture. From Adams Morgan to the U Street Corridor, there’s no end of eclectic flavours and hot beats. Go high end at celebrity chef José André’s cocktail lab, Barmini. Next door is MiniBar, his luxe tasting-menu restaurant. Seating just 12, it’s pure theatre. For rekindling romance, though, I like Cut in Georgetown, a highlight of the September 2022 weekend with my new old boyfriend, whom I dated when I was 15.

Lighting is everything so, after dinner, take a stroll. The Capitol, the Washington Monument and the Lincoln Memorial are just some of the city’s architectural wonders that are spectacularly lit at night. Tourist-free, the two of you, a split of champagne. It works. High-thread-count bedding makes for intimate moments, but so does art. My favourites: the Hirshhorn Sculpture Garden; the Phillips Collection; and Glenstone, where art, architecture and nature merge.
