JourneyWoman: Solo But Not Alone
Travelling solo shouldn’t have to mean travelling alone. Part of the pleasure of being on a journey is meeting new people along the way. Here are a few of my tried-and-true tips designed to help you break the ice and find fun company on the road.
– Avoid large hotels. Choose a more intimate B & B setting where the likelihood of meeting other solo travellers is greater.
– Don’t like to dine alone? Find a small restaurant you enjoy and keep going back. Once the staff get to know you, they’ll look forward to chatting and sharing insider information. Join a walking tour at your destination. Chances are there will be another single for company, and the two of you can arrange to have a meal or continue sightseeing together.
– Do you play bridge? A website search will inform you where you can locate a club that welcomes outsiders.
– To make solo evenings more interesting, check museum websites for Singles Nights – a perfect opportunity to munch and mingle with locals.
