Room Service: Live like the Royals in London

We’re all familiar with the term keeping up with the Joneses, but how about the Cambridges?

If you’re planning a London getaway, try the neighbourhood in which Kate, Wills and baby George lay their heads. The Milestone Hotel sits across the street from Kensington Palace – the former home of Queen Victoria’s famed tea receptions – and its expansive gardens, and if you take afternoon tea (a must-do) in The Park Lounge, you’ll be within view of the majestic house and the grounds.

But teatime at The Milestone is not just a dainty affair. The hotel has introduced a Gentleman’s Afternoon Tea, where a man and his mates can sit down to savoury pork pies, Cornish pasties and maple-cured bacon scones – and a flight tasting of ale or whisky. Of course, ladies are invited, too.

Speaking of ladies, the lady of this house, Red Carnation Hotels founder Mrs. Beatrice Tollman, has created a cookbook, A Life in Food, which encompasses her 30 years of dishing it out in her 17 hotels, including at The Milestone. After trying the afternoon tea chicken sandwich, we couldn’t resist asking her for the recipe.  Delicious with tea or just brown-bagging it.
