Prince William “just cannot forgive his brother,” according to Katie Nicholl, author of The New Royals: Queen Elizabeth’s Legacy and the Future of the Crown. Nicholl was informed by a source very close to William.
Prince Harry and Meghan, the Duchess of Sussex, joined William and Kate, the Prince and Princess of Wales in Windsor on Sept. 10 to mourn the death of Queen Elizabeth II with the public.
Harry and Meghan flew back home from the U.K. on Sept. 20, the day after the Queen’s funeral.
“He always thought Harry would be his wingman, now William’s doing it on his own,” said Nicholl.
Nicholl is Vanity Fair’s royal correspondent and co-hosts Dynasty, a podcast about influential families whose debut season focuses on the Royal Family. Her book, The New Royals, explores where the Royal Family is heading with King Charles III, William and Kate at the helm, and the outcomes from Harry and Meghan’s departure.
In January 2020, Harry and Meghan announced they would step back as senior working members of the Royal Family, intending to divide their time between the U.K. and North America. In February 2021, the couple permanently quit, relinquishing all their royal duties.
The Duke and Duchess of Sussex’s departure from the Royal Family followed from a “lack of support and lack of understanding,” said Harry in an interview with Oprah.
Harry and Meghan alleged there was no support from the Royal Family when Meghan was experiencing suicidal thoughts due to racism she experienced from the British press and Royal Family’s institution, the Firm.
Harry has also expressed his frustration with the way Meghan was being treated by the British press and “asked for calm from the British tabloids”, to no avail.
In this same interview with Oprah, Harry shared allegations of racist comments from someone within the family when Meghan was pregnant with their first child, Archie.
When Harry and Meghan announced their leave, the British press claimed their decision blindsided the Queen.
In The New Royals, Nicholl writes that William and Kate ultimately felt relief when Harry and Meghan decided to move to the U.S. because the “drama was gone.”
