Drooping eyelids and excess bags underneath the eyes are a common occurrence with aging. Blepharoplasty surgery can help correct these eye problems.

Eyesight can begin to be affected by this, as well, sagging skin below the eye can make one look tired all the time. Dr. Cory Torgerson, a Facial Cosmetic Surgeon in Yorkville, Toronto is an expert in blepharoplasty, the surgical procedure that can help correct either or both of these eye problems.

Blepharoplasty is a surgical procedure where excess skin is removed from either the upper or lower eyelids or both. It is actually a very common surgery; According to 2011 AAFPRS statistics, eyelid surgery is the 2nd most common head and neck procedure performed on women over the age of 35. It ranks in the top 4 procedures for men over 35 years of age. For patients over the age of 61, blepharoplasty ranked as one of the most popular procedures of all.

Blepharoplasty can be performed without affecting your eyesight because the surgeon does not go near the eye itself. Upper blepharoplasty can correct the droop in the eyelids, which is commonly known as hooding, and also improve one’s eyesight. Lower blepharoplasty can correct problems underneath the eye where excess skin begins to pouch out over time and form tired-looking bags.

Depending on whether a patient is undergoing upper or lower blepharoplasty, a tiny incision is made in the crease of the upper eyelid or in the wrinkle beneath the lashes of the lower eyelid. After the excess skin is removed, fine sutures are used to close the incision. Because the location of the incision is in your natural folds, any scars are practically invisible. The skin of the lids is very thin and this aids in healing with minimal scarring as well. This type of surgery is usually conducted using local anaesthetic with sedation.

A common concern with this procedure is if the candidate will be able to close their eyes properly after surgery. A successful blepharoplasty depends on the art of removing the correct amount of skin. This is why it is essential to undergo surgery with only a licenced, experienced Facial Plastic surgeon. It is also recommended that patients take one week to 10 days off of work for recovery. Sutures are removed 5 days post surgery.

With his MD, PhD and FRCSC designations, it shows that discipline, experience and 18 years of post-secondary education, have made Dr. Torgerson one of Canada’s highest trained and most desirable surgeons in Head and Neck procedures.
