Eye Health Tip of the Day

By Charmaine Gooden

Omega-3 essential fatty acids
Consuming two grams per day of fish-derived essential fatty acids( EPA and DHA) will prevent macular degeneration and naturally improve eyes’ moisture levels to prevent dry eye syndrome. Cold water fish like wild salmon, sardines, mackerel, tuna and rainbow trout are all high in Omega-3 essential fatty acids (EPA, DHA), which are naturally anti-inflammatory, increase the ratio of good cholesterol and nourish nerve and brain tissue. The result is a healthy blood supply to the eyes, better tear production (reducing dryness), and white, happy-looking eyes. A fish-derived Omega-3 supplement is a safe way to get the recommended daily two grams. Plant-based Omega-3s may contain arachidonic acid (ALA) which can be pro-inflammatory, causing the opposite results.
