“A line has been crossed”: Kensington Palace releases statement on behalf of Prince Harry about the treatment of his girlfriend, Meghan Markle.

In an unprecedented step, Prince Harry has confirmed his relationship with Toronto-based American actress Meghan Markle and condemned the media for the “wave of abuse and harassment” Markle’s faced since news first broke that they were dating. A press release addressing the issue was sent out by Kensington Palace.

It says Prince Harry is “deeply disappointed” at the media’s harassment of his girlfriend and at his inability to “protect her” from it.

It reads, in part:

“His girlfriend, Meghan Markle, has been subject to a wave of abuse and harassment. Some of this has been very public—the smear on the front page of a national newspaper; the racial undertones of comment pieces; and the outright sexism and racism of social media trolls and web article comments. Some of it has been hidden from the public—the nightly legal battles to keep defamatory stories out of papers; her mother having to struggle past photographers in order to get to her front door; the attempts of reporters and photographers to gain illegal entry to her home and the calls to police that followed…”

While the press release only confirms what royal watchers already knew with regards to a secret relationship, it’s highly unusual that the normally private Prince Harry would launch such an unprecedented public attack. There’s no denying the power of this press release.

The statement continues:

“[Prince Harry] knows commentators will say this is ‘the price she has to pay’ and that ‘this is all part of the game.’ He strongly disagrees. This is not a game—it is her life and his.”
