The Grandkids’ guide to – the “Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides”

As the lights went down and the projector switched on, I heard the familiar music to one of the most popular action adventure series of our time, and then, before I knew it, Captain Jack Sparrow (Johnny Depp) popped up on the screen and I was suddenly seven years old again, sitting on the edge of my seat.

This Pirates is about powerful enemy countries England and Spain on the hunt for the Fountain of Youth and Jack Sparrow trying to beat them all to find it. On the way he has run-ins with some familiar characters such as Captain Barbosa (Geoffrey Rush) and his trusted friend Mr. Gibbs, and not so familiar characters such as the sinister Black Beard (Ian McShane), his daughter – and Jack’s former love interest – Angelica (Penelope Cruz) all of whom are also trying to find the fountain, while Jack, of course, really only cares about getting back his beloved ship, the Black Pearl, which Barbosa has lost at the hands of Black Beard (who is also in possession of an evil enchanted sword). I was very impressed by this film because it was so different yet familiar that you don’t even miss Elizabeth or Will, or the silly pirates that used to sail with Jack.

All you really need is Jack Sparrow getting into yet another mess and you’ve got a hit. All in all, it was an excellent film for all ages (no bad language or nudity!) and I highly recommended.  —Madeline Heyes, 13
