Recipe: Holiday Nuts and Bolts

This classic holiday mix is perfect for gift giving to all the people who provide services to us during the year, or for good snacks when the grandchildren come to visit. Substitute other nuts as desired, such as walnuts or almonds. Make it extra healthy with whole grain cereals.

2 cups   Cheerios                                                                  500 mL

3 cups Honey Nut Chex Cereal or Shreddies                  750 mL

1 cup Pretzel sticks                                                              250 mL

1 cup peanuts                                                                       250 mL

1/2 cup cashews                                                                   125 mL

2 tbsp corn syrup                                                                   25 mL

2 tbsp honey                                                                           25 mL

2 tbsp unsalted butter                                                           25 mL

½ teaspoon vanilla                                                                   2 mL


Preheat oven to 325 degrees F. Mix cereals and nuts in large roasting pan. In small saucepan, combine corn syrup, honey, butter and vanilla. Bring to boil. Pour over cereal mixture and stir to mix evenly.

Bake 20 minutes, stirring halfway through. Let cool. Store in airtight containers or jars for gifting.  Makes about 7 cups.
