Having a Blast with the Past at World MasterCard Fashion Week

Everything old is new again.
Canadian designers mined past eras – particularly the 1950s and 1960s – for inspiration for their fall 2013 collections shown last week on the runways at World MasterCard Fashion Week in Toronto.
The nod to retro looks included Izzy Camilleri’s debut of her MIZ line which featured classic black and white houndstooth mod looks.
Kimberley Newport Mimran of Pink Tartan also featured graphic mod black and white patterns but also went a step further by styling all her models in blond bob wigs – all slightly disheveled for a twisted look on the prim and proper 1960s lady.
Designers Mike Derderian and Gianni Falcone, the duo behind the evening wear label Pavoni, channeled the icy cool glamour of Grace Kelly with stunning lace and tulle confections.
But it wasn’t all retro looks suitable for a costume party. There were designers, like John Muscat and Jennifer Wells of the knitwear label Line, that took a full skirt and modernized it in glittering metallic gold. While at Joe Fresh, some of the mod looks were brimming with youthful energy and zest, proving that you can borrow from the past to charge forward.
