Which bank funds are best?

Q – Taking aside the no-load mutual funds of the chartered banks (CIBC, BMO, TD, Royal), which has had the best record of return in past year and the past three years? – A.M.M., Winnipeg

A – We review model portfolios of all the big banks twice yearly in our Mutual Funds Update newsletter. As of the last review, in February, the TD funds were the clear winners over the 3-1/2 years we have been tracking our model Safety and Growth Portfolios. Our TD Growth Portfolio also did best over the tough six-month period to Dec. 31. However, the Scotia Safety Portfolio was the top performer in its group over that time.

Long-term, the CIBC Safety Portfolio has the worst record, while the Scotia Growth Portfolio is the weakest performer in that category. – G.P.
