Hitting great golf links online

Somebody once said that golf translates oddly well into words, which helps explain why its literature is wide-ranging and often sophisticated. Well, hang on to your golf caps, because it also translates oddly well into the web. There are so many golf websites that one could spend hours, days or weeks surfing for pleasure. Here are some of the best websites, in no particular order. Bookmark them and surf away.

  • www.pgatour.com, the official website of the PGA (Professional Golf Association) Tour, is ideal for live scoring from tournaments. You can follow your favourite players — on the PGA Tour, the Senior PGA Tour, or the BUY.COM Tour. The site also provides stories about players, biographical material and live chats with players. A series on “Healthy Golf” was full of helpful information. Well worth the membership fee.

  • www.golfdigest.com is a first-rate website provided by Golf Digest, one of the world’s most popular publications on the game. Read Tim Rosaforte’s “Tour Insider.” Check the website during the majors and get all the information you’ll need. Tiger Woods is on the magine’s staff, so there’s always lots of material about him. The site provides an archive of the magazine’s best Masters stories. And the archive of player features might keep you indoors for days on end. There’s a ton of instruction too, so keep a club at your side when you read.

  • www.golfonline.com features material from Golf magazine, another excellent publication. The statistics section is terrific: type in the name of a player learn the most arcane stats from across his or her career — such as how many times the player has been within five shots of the lead going into the last round. There are columns and sections on golf courses, travel, instruction, senior golf and fitness.

  • Golf Digest Woman can be reached through www.golfdigest.com. You’ll find stories on women’s golf, packages on majors — including the U.S. Women’s Open — rules discussions, instruction from top players such as Se Ri Pak and Grace Park, interactive opinion polls and helpful tips on a variety of subjects.

  • www.worldofgolftv.com. I record a personal interest here, because this is the website for the television show Acura World of Golf in which I’m involved. You can participate in the Golfer’s Choice Awards contest, research golf destinations, check the telecast schedule, get tips from golfers Richard Zokol and Shelley Woolner, and find transcripts of interviews I’ve done with many players: Mike Weir, Lorie Kane, Nick Price, Jack Nicklaus, Greg Norman, Ernie Els, Ben Crenshaw among others.
