The Zoomer Report: Nouveau Wines 2009

Remember the craze for Nouveau wines in the eighties? The fad for huge fanfare and glitzy parties marking the annual November release has been over for a long time. But if you like the light-style Nouveau and Novello wines, eight 2009 versions (6 from France, 2 from Italy) are in store now.

They’re getting rave reviews. It was a long sunny growing season in France this year — so the Nouveaus in particular, are said to be excellent. In fact, famed Beaujolais producer Georges Duboeuf proclaimed this year’s harvest “the best of the last 50 years.”

These wines are budget-friendly — they are all under $15. Experts say they should be served slightly chilled and pair well with appetizers, hard cheeses, patés, and festive ham or prosciutto.
