Travel tips: Staying regular

These uncomfortable and unfortunately very common afflictions can be alleviated by avoiding unfamiliar foods and including fibre sources such as bran, non-citrus fruit and vegetables into the traveler’s diet. For constipation relief try psyllium husk powder, a natural source of dietary fibre that has been used for centuries to soften stools and clean the intestines. In addition, natural digestive enzymes such as lactobacillus acidophilus or papaya can help to remedy upset stomachs.

For relief of gas and diarrhea, consider activated charcoal (in capsule form) at the first sign of discomfort. Also, if travelling in areas where drinking water may be a concern, choose bottled water. Insist that it is opened at the table. And remember that ice is likely to have been made with local water, so forgo it in other drinks.
